Rider Spotlight: Erika Hurst

Name: Erika Hurst

Age: 32

Social Media: @erikahurst_ (IG)

Fun fact about you(non racing related):

-I own a women’s strength gym! (@strongherfitnessct on IG)

How long have you been riding/racing?:

-I just started racing harescrambles in 2019 and I have been riding for 4 years.

Series:

-NETRA

How did riding become a part of your life?:

-It’s something I had always wanted to do since I was little, but never thought I could especially since I didn’t know anyone else who rode at the time. I went through a really low point in my late 20s and I needed something to help pull me out of it. I had been following some ladies on IG who rode and that really inspired me to just go for it, so I did. Now I can’t imagine life without it.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve come across in the racing industry?:

-Honestly, everyone in the local series I race in has been SO supportive and encouraging and I’m so new to it that I haven’t faced any major challenges within it. I can’t speak for ladies on a higher level or who have been racing longer though.

How do you think things could be improved for women in the racing world?:

-Definitely more space and representation overall. I’d love to see more women riders used in advertising and media too.

What advice do you have for young girls starting out in racing?:

-Hold your ground. You have every right to be there as anyone else. Don’t let anyone (including yourself!) make you feel otherwise. And don't be afraid to ask for help.

Where do you see yourself going with racing?:

-I started racing just as a way to push myself harder than I would riding alone and get out of my comfort zone, so I plan on continuing doing that and keep being my own biggest competition!
